Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship (Hungary)

Updated 29 September 2026

Stipendium Hungaricum is the Hungarian government's scholarship for international students. It is based on agreements between Hungary and partner countries, so availability depends on where you're from.

What it covers

The scholarship generally includes:

  • Free tuition
  • A monthly stipend (higher for PhD students)
  • Free dormitory place or a contribution towards accommodation costs
  • Medical insurance

Who can apply

You need to be a citizen of one of the scholarship's partner countries and meet the entry requirements of your chosen programme. Each partner country also sets its own rules and quotas.

How the application works

There are two steps, and both are required:

  1. Apply online on the Stipendium Hungaricum application system, choosing up to two programmes.
  2. Get nominated by your Sending Partner, the authority in your home country (often the ministry of education or a scholarship board). Check what your Sending Partner requires, because some have their own separate application.

Documents you'll need

  • Passport
  • Motivation letter
  • Transcripts and diplomas
  • Language certificate
  • Medical certificate
  • Recommendation letters and a research plan for PhD applicants

Tips

Hungarian universities often hold entrance exams or interviews, sometimes online. Prepare for them as carefully as for the written application.
