The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) runs many scholarship programmes. One of the best known for international applicants is EPOS, which funds selected development-related postgraduate courses at German universities.
DAAD scholarships typically include a monthly payment for living costs, health insurance, a travel allowance, and in some cases a study allowance and rent subsidy. Many EPOS courses are taught in English, and some include a German language course before the programme begins.
EPOS is aimed at professionals from developing countries. Common requirements include:
Each course sets its own extra requirements, so read its page carefully.
Unlike many scholarships, you usually apply directly to the course, not to DAAD centrally. The university then selects candidates and nominates them for the scholarship. Use the DAAD website to find the list of EPOS courses and each one's deadline.
Your motivation letter should link your work experience, the course content and your future role at home. Show that you understand the course and explain exactly how you'll use what you learn.
Applications are submitted on the official website, and they are free. Check the current deadline and eligibility there before you start.
